Highlights of the year

This subject allows students to participate in diverse events through organizing various activities, enabling them to learn through experiences and gain a deeper understanding of historical development. Additionally, this subject actively coordinates various exchange tours, such as trips to mainland China and overseas, to expose the students to their country and the world, fostering their development as global citizens.

1. Essay Contest

This subject has always strongly encouraged students to participate in essay writing contests, many of which are related to Chinese historical figures. This allows students to gain a deeper understanding in Chinese history, thus enhancing their knowledge of their homeland.

2. Leader Training

This subject actively cultivates students to become leaders, frequently nominating students to participate as student cultural ambassadors at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. These students undergo training that last for nearly one year to become capable leaders who can introduce the Palace Museum. The history of the Palace Museum is a significant part of the country’s history, and through these activities, students can learn about the museum’s history, promote its culture within the community, and serve the society.

3. Competitions and Activities

This subject leads students to participate in various competitions and activities, many of which result in excellent performances, boosting students’ confidence and sense of achievement. With the encouragement of teachers, students continue to learn and engage in historical activities, increasing their motivation to study history.

4. Study Tour

To deepen students’ understanding in history and culture, the school’s History, Chinese History, and Geography Department, jointly organized a historical, cultural, and ecology tour to Okinawa, Japan with the Moral, Civic and National Education committee. This tour provided students with an opportunity to learn more about world history, particularly reflections on war. After the activity, students had deep reflections, realizing how World War II brought severe destruction to the world and gaining a deeper understanding in the importance of world peace.

Aims

The aims of this curriculum are to enable students to:

(a) discover where they stand in the contemporary world through understanding the origins

and development of modern events;

(b) develop the skills of critical thinking, making sound judgments and effective

communication through exploring historical issues;

(c) approach past and current events in an impartial and empathetic manner, using a variety

of perspectives;

(d) understand the characteristics and values of their own culture, and appreciate the shared

humanity and common problems of the world’s many peoples;

(e) cultivate both national consciousness and the consciousness of being citizens of the

global community, and thus become rational and sensible members of the local

community, the nation and the world; and

(f) be prepared to explore in greater depth an issue of personal interest, or one that may be of relevance to their future careers and professional studies.

Objectives

Students are expected to acquire knowledge and develop understanding of:

(a) basic historical concepts, such as cause and effect, change and continuity, and

similarities and differences;

(b) diverse standpoints and perspectives inherent in different ways of representing and

interpreting the past;

(c) the beliefs, experiences and behaviours of their own nation as well as of other nations,

and the ways in which they have shaped the development of the contemporary world;

(d) the inter-relations of major events and movements that have occurred in the local

community, the nation, Asia and the world in the 20th century; and (e) the major historical developments and trends that have shaped the contemporary world.
